It all began when Jeff and Linda Peloquin, owners of Vista Wood Bison Ranch and Peloquin Construction, wanted to raise a healthy alternative meat which is not normally available at the grocery. That is how their bison herd began with a bull and a few females.
It has grown since then, and now they have a herd of 11 but they would like to see it double.
The bison are mostly self-sufficient, grazing their food over 25 acres of the family’s 80-acre property located in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Bison are the largest mammals in North America according to the National Bison Association. Before Europeans arrived, millions of the animals were thought to be all over the country. By 1800’s the species was nearly wiped out and an estimate of 1,500 were left. Now thanks to preservation efforts and the work of private farmers there are about 350,000.
Besides growing the herd they enjoy them and also enjoy sharing their life with other people.
Vista Wood Bison Ranch is a member of the Eastern Bison Association and Hillsborough Farmers Market.
